i’ve added this fill-a-cup sponsoring thing

to this blog – see bottom right.

supposedly it will help the UN World Food Programme raise money (and definitely awareness). i was fortunate enough to observe the school feeding program first hand when i was in mozambique and i believe this is a cause that can’t be publicized enough.

the school feeding program provides a warm meal, served at school, to kids. very often this is the only meal these kids get a day. normally, these kids don’t go to school because they have to support the family and work somewhere to earn a living. by sending the child to school, it’s one less meal to provide for at home, so there is your incentive to go to school.

in some cases, it takes months for the child to actually be in school and learn. they walk for miles and are usually so exhausted that all they do at school is sleep, eat, and sleep some more. their body needs to recover and regain strength and only then can they actually learn. yet every day at school is important, every school year is important to escape the poverty trap. and it is especially important to have girls sent to school.

there’s also a tv spot by sean penn who is supporting wfp, maybe you’ve seen it. spread the word and donate if you can.

mh, i think i need to blog about my experience in africa more often.
