book review: stumbling upon happiness by daniel gilbert

i stumbled upon this book in a brooklyn book store and was instantly hooked after reading a few pages. granted, it sounds like one of those self-help books like chicken soup for the soul and the like. yet this book is a lot more than that. it explains why we are after happiness and what each and ever one of us thinks happiness is. and while we’re running after happiness we make all kinds of mistakes because, well basically because we don’t trust our guts, because we do trust our guts. because we don’t use our brains, and because we do. because we don’t ask our peers and if we do don’t accept their advice.

reading this book will not make you happier but it will make you think about why you strive for this feeling you call “being happy” and what it truly means to you. you’ll gain an insight into how our minds work that is quite incredible (and made me consider studying psychology).

daniel gilbert has a funny way of writing and uses a lot of psychological background info to illustrate his point. great book!

clearly, snow and sleet just ignore me

winter has hit full frontal. without me noticing of course because hey, i tend to miss things like weather reports.

so even though it had snowed all night long and in the morning when i got ready for work i still expected the roads to be clear. so i put on my heels and walked down the stairs, ready to walk to work. i should have turned around after a few meters when the first patches of snow stuck to the soles of my shoes forcing me to walk all weird. what did smart-small-town-girl do? right, i continued to walk. i must have looked very pathetic because with the snow and ice clinging to the soles of my feet made me slip and slide constantly. i wonder why i thought i could defy the laws of winter – as if the snow on the sidewalk would just melt away as soon as i am approaching…

when i had finally reached the tram it just got worse because the ice on my shoes didn’t allow me to stand straight, i just slid everywhere. go me!

for tomorrow i have learned my lesson and will put on my super awesome winter boots. they keep me warm until -30 celcius. with a windchill of -25 celcius (-5.8 F)  i really need that! and my winter coat stays home as well. i will sport a jacket worthy of a ski vacation. anything else does not keep me warm right now.

tomorrow you can read here how i met my new boss on the tram this morning. at 9:30am, a time when i should have been sitting at my desk for at least half an hour and not be on my way to work…

now let’s just hope i don’t kill myself when actually attempting to sow!

[edit] update: i did survive and managed to try out a few things including sowing a nasty looking pillowcase. hey, nobody is perfect yet for a first attempt i am content with myself. now all i need are ideas for projects that are easy enough to keep me going and look difficult enough to impress, lol. ;-)
