me and make-up? not the best friends. when i grew up i did not have a female role model in my life who used make up. so i just never got the idea of using it myself. the few feeble attempts, mostly consisting of blue eyeshadow and hideous shades of lipstick, were quickly abandoned when i realized that i wasn’t able to receive the results i intended.
over the years (we’re talking my teenage years people, high school and all) i acquired a pile of eyeshadows in super strange colors, a bunch of lipstick, mascara in all types, and powders and foundations en masse. still, i had no clue about how to really use them.
so i read, magazines, online stuff (wait, that must have happened later because internet came into my life when i was in my late teens or early 20s), tried to spy on other women when they used make up…i am still no make-up professional and will never be one. need proof? on a regular basis i manage to stab myself either with my foundation brush or my mascara brush. typically, i move closer to the mirror. and closer. and closer. and then it happens, a brush lands in my eye. lovely, really. it hurts (to all the men out there) – i think the ladies know what i am talking about.
can you believe i turn 30 in 13 months??? soon i will have to learn how to hide my wrinkles!!!
don’t get me wrong, i like and treasure the little skills i have. and i think i am doing an ok job. of course it’s a big plus that no one sees my stabbing attempts. sometimes i wish i could do those smokey eyes or create some elaborate piece of art in my face. but hey, i look at it positively. at least NOW I KNOW what mascara is, and eyeshadow, and eyeliner (pencil or liquid….oh don’t get me started on the experience with liquid eyeliner…). and i love applying my foundation with a brush. it feels a little like i’m drawing my work-self onto me every morning. don’t read this as schizophrenic as it sounds, i hope you understand what i mean.
oh, and ever since i’m using some eye drops to lubricate my eyes i actually have eye lashes to highlight with mascara! yet it took me a while to dare to buy an eyelash curler. i mean, did you ever look at these things? they look like a scary piece taken right out of the guantanamo tool set! but applied correctly (and to actually present eye lashes) it can work some awesome magic.
oh by the way, i learned how to braid (hair or yarn or anything) when i was 12. THAT tells you how far behind i really was in the girlie department.

I still can’t braid. Although I’m pretty good at makeup. It just takes practice. Watch youtube videos or troll blogs.
i’m afraid i am not willing to put in as much time and effort into what i would need to get me from NOW to WOW…
you’re right though, it’s a practice thing. practice makes perfect or so they say ~ franzi
I know what you mean!!! It looks so easy on some women and I have spent hours in the bathroom to come nowhere near what I wanted to have on my face. I would really like someone showing me how to apply liquid eyeliner and so on…. a real 101…

~ franzi
