book review: we need to talk about kevin by lionel shriver

this book was super disturbing for me but captivating up until the very last page. i can’t write much about the end because that would kind of give it all away but i expected something very different.

let’s talk about kevin is an assortment of letters a mother is writing to her husband. in these letters she writes about their family and the difficulties she in particular faced as a mother to a boy she never was able to understand or feel close to.

to her, her son is malicious, cold, and does not have a touch of empathy in him. to her husband, their son is perfect, maybe a bit secluded at times but still the perfect son. the real problem to him is how his wife sees their son. he feels that she is just looking out for evil in him, making him responsible for her shortcomings.

i don’t want to take too much of the plot away here. it’s definitely worth a read albeit a disturbing one. if you are sensitive to school violence this may not be your book.
