tag – you’re it!

i was tagged by melissasuewho and  while i’m usually not the chainletter/blog award/tag you’re it type of person, there was something about her questions posed to the 11 blogs she tagged that made me participate.

the rules for playing blog tag are simple:

1- You must post the rules
2- Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post
3- Create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged
4- Tag eleven people with a link to your post
5- Let them know they’ve been tagged

im german so i’m all for rules… ;-)

here are the questions melissa asked me:

1- What is your favorite quote?

there are many quotes that i find inspirational and i don’t think i have a favorite one. a few years ago i read this one on facebook and i decided to pick it for this question because it got me thinking:

war does not determine who is right but who is left.

if you know who said this please enlighten me!

2- Do you believe in ghosts?

sort of. those tv shows with ghost hunters freak me out.

3- What was the biggest splurge you’ve ever allowed yourself?

i think i’m a conservative spender. one of the most expensive goodies i ever allowed myself to have is a mac book pro. :-) go apple!

4- If you could spend a day with someone famous, who would you choose?

oh my, tough cookie because i often fantasized about going back in time and meeting famous people or seeing famous events to make up my own opinion of the events. i feel like a lot that is taught is interpretations, a guessing game. so i would like to just be there and know. like meeting jesus, like being in egypt when the pharaos reigned, but i am also interested in meeting hitler so understand what he was all about. being german, hitler and the atrocities of his regime have been a part of my education from early on and there are so many questions i would like to ask (not sure if i would like the answers though). and if he really existed i would like to meet jesus to get his take on his current followers.

5- What was your favorite childhood book?

oh, i read so many books…one that i vividly remember and that i used to be able to recite front to back is “die sonnenkinder” (the sun’s children). it’s about the sun rays and how they greet the earth each morning. on the sun rays the sun’s children slide down and bring the sun to every oh so remote place. cute book.

6- Release your inner geek!  What are you a total nerd about?

i am a nerd about organizational tools and organizing in general. i like things to have their place and i like it when it all fits on/in shelves or drawers or can be stacked….you name it. stores like staples or the container store are heaven for me. but rest asured, my place does NOT look organized at all and my special trait for home organization is piling it all up on the floor. ;-) way to go organizational nerd.

7- What’s the last song you had stuck in your head?

oh, tough cookie again. i usually have songs stuck in my head but now i can’t remember any of them…

8- Who never fails to make you laugh?

that would be the special person in my life. he makes me laugh whenever we talk and he knows just when a little extra humor is needed.

9- What was your first car?

i never owned a car. the few times i had access to what would qualify as “mostly my car” i was driving an opel, a saab, and a volvo. oh, and for work i occasionally got to drive a mercedes. quite an upgrade ;-)

10- Who has been your biggest source of inspiration?

that’s a tough question. many people in my life have inspired me most importantly my mom of course. she’s been through a lot in her life and yet she’s still around and never gave up. i have her resilient streak. currently very inspiring to me is the story of dawn loggins who has had a rough upbringing and very tough years in high school. yet she worked hard, she was persistant, she wanted to succeed. and now she’ll go to harvard, being the first graduate of her high school to achieve that. dawn’s story is very inspirational.

11- Who is your favorite “Wizard of Oz” character?

dorothy of course! she’s got red cute shiny shoes that would look perfect on my shoeshrine!!!

my questions to the blogs i am tagging are these:

1. What is your favorite day of the week and why?

2. what was one of your favorite tricks to cheat in school tests?

3. what is your first childhood memory?

4. what is your favorite ice cream?

5. what is your favorite app?

6. what is your favorite travel destination (been there or want to be there)?

7. what sport do you think looks funny?

8. firefox or internet explorer?

9. what languages do you speak?

10. how many stamps from foreign countries are in your current passport?

11. how many unread emails are in your inbox?

and here are the blogs i tagged :-)

fighting headaches

i don’t know what it is but over the past week or so i have had lots of headaches. they are not constant and they vary in intensity but it’s enough to be really annoying.

i am trying to drink enough fluids and as usual i’m below what one should drink each day. so nothing changed there. it’s not my apartment because i also have headaches at work. and it’s not the time of day because sometimes i get it in the morning, often during the day and sometimes in the evening preventing me to fall asleep.

i’m trying to relax my eyes and stretch my neck and back and do whatever but i am clueless as to what else (aside from aspirin) will help.

if you have suggestions (aside from medication) please let me know, i’m at my wits end and it’s annoying to be in pain. thanks!

six months without shopping? heck no!

recently, i saw a report on two women who did not buy any clothing/accessories/shoes for six months. the aim was to

a) see if that is even possible to do and

b) save some money.

and that made me wonder if i could do the same. could i go six months without new clothes? new shoes? to tell you right upfront, i don’t plan on trying this!

i’m not a shoppaholic. while i enjoy buying something nice for myself i can take a stroll through town and not buy anything. and i typically have a limit on what each item is allowed to cost. like my limit on jeans is 80 euro. if it’s more i don’t buy it. i broke that rule once (and it was SO worth it! i am the proud owner of a seven for all mankind jeans!). but typically i stick to the prices i set in my mind.

the transition from being a student to someone who has a job and regular income that allows to go for higher priced items or an easier “should i buy this or not”-decision was not easy for me. when i grew up we didn’t have much. we certainly were not poor but i know that my mom sacrificed a lot in order for my sister and i to get what we wanted. as a kid i didn’t notice that so much, all i saw was that the girls in school had 5 or 10 barbies and i had two. when the kids fell for the troll toys and formed their own troll club that one could only join if you had a troll – guess what? i never had a troll and thus could not join the club. i begged my friends but they were strict on that and i guess it didn’t help that the girl who was heading the club was not necessarily my best friend.

anyways, what i was trying to get to was that i never had much money at my disposal and i learned that you should not spend what you do not have. so for the first 6-9 months after i had a job i still lived the life of a student. and that included spending money on clothes only if it was really necessary. the transition to a regular shopper took a while.

nowadays a sale sign can trick me into buying something but thankfully that doesn’t happen very often. i think i’m still frugal.

and for me, just like clothing can be something nice and rewarding, getting good food and preparing it for myself serves the same purpose. actually, i think treating myself to good food than to clothing is more rewarding.

so to go back to the challenge, could i go six months without shopping? NO!!! shoppaholic or not, i like to be able to treat me to something that i like.

tell me, would you accept that challenge?
