in which i talk about the weather – like every german does at the moment

it is freaking cold!

really people, do i need to say more? i wanted to refrain from posts about the weather but it is so cold out, it’s almost unbelievable. yet, i lived through one michigan winter so i know temperatures like these are possible.

as you can see at 9:30 this morning it was -21 degrees celsius. that is -5.8 fahrenheit for you people on the other side of the ocean. whatever scale you use IT IS COLD!!! in case you wonder how cold it is, imagine going outside and breathing in through your nose. if you feel your nose hair freeze instantly — THAT’S HOW COLD IT IS!!!

last night was the coldest night in germany in 27 years (overall). yeah, i kind of had a feeling i didn’t feel this cold before ;-) i am running out of options of what to wear to work since i walk part of the way. there is a limit to how many tights one can wear, let me tell you!

i like winter but these temperatures make me reconsider. it’s impossible to do anything outside without gloves. forget texting or making smart phone phone calls. (on a side note, i am aware that there are special smart phone gloves and that you can also operate your smart phone with a sausage but i like my gloves and i don’t want to walk around with sausages in my pockets.)

i am ready for spring to start. without rain or water leaks or anything please.

smartphone or not?

my current cell phone has been with me since 2002. i did have a different cell in between but most of those years i was with this cell. but i have to realize that this phone has had it’s best days.

my cell phone contract is up for renewal which means i can get a new phone. for some i have to pay extra, others you get for free.

now i am wondering what phone i should get. basically everyone tells me that smartphone is the way to go. i guess i agree to a certain extend but then again, is it really? what is wrong with having a phone that can be used just for phone calls and text messages?

one of my friends asked me what i use my phone for. well, talking and text messaging. that’s because my phone cannot do anything else! forget taking pictures or going online or listening to music. my phone is ancient!

i’d like a phone i can use to listen to music. and i guess the idea of going online just like that is a nice add on. but do i really need to be online all the time? if i am online i will go online. so maybe it’s better not to delve into this. or am i just being ignorant to the big changes in the cell phone market and smartphones are the only option if i want to stay with the curve (i don’t even pretend to be ahead of the curve…).

suggestions?
